What Is The Required D50 For Silica In Coatings?

D50 is the median particle size of silica powder, a core parameter for coating silica. The required D50 value changes drastically depending on whether silica acts as a matting agent, rheology modifier, reinforcing filler or anti-slip additive. This article draws on silica dry milling and air classification technology knowledge from silica-mill.com.

D50 ranges by coating function & application

1. Precipitated silica matting agents (most common coating silica)

Matting silica creates micro-roughness on dried film surfaces to scatter light and reduce gloss.

  • Clear lacquers, transparent topcoats, high-clarity wood coatings: D50 = 3–5 μm. This fine median size delivers low haze and high transparency while providing mild matting effect.
  • General wood coatings, furniture topcoats, leather topcoats: D50 = 5–8 μm. Balances matting strength, transparency and sandability; widely used for medium-matt finishes.
  • Architectural matte wall paints, industrial floor coatings, powder coatings: D50 = 6–12 μm. Larger D50 gives deeper matte effect. Coarser particles build stronger surface texture, but will reduce transparency and may cause slight surface roughness.

2. Fumed silica for rheology control (anti-sag, anti-settling)

Fumed silica uses nano-scale primary aggregates. Its measured D50 after dispersion is 0.1–0.5 μm. It does not work as a matting agent; it is added at low loading to build thixotropy, prevent pigment settling and stop sagging on vertical coating surfaces.

3. Crystalline / fused silica flour (extender, anti-abrasion filler)

Silica flour acts as low-cost extender, scratch resistance and anti-slip filler:

  • High-performance epoxy floor, heavy-duty industrial coatings: D50 = 10–25 μm
  • General protective coatings: D50 = 25–45 μm

Why D50 alone is not enough

While D50 sets the median particle size, narrow PSD and strict removal of oversized grit are equally critical:

  1. Oversized particles (D97 / Dmax) above the threshold will produce pinholes, specks and surface scratches in thin coating films, even if D50 meets the target.
  2. A broad PSD with excessive ultra-fine fractions increases viscosity, impairs coating leveling and changes matting consistency batch to batch.
  3. Dry de-agglomeration and air classification equipment break hard spray-dried agglomerates and cut coarse fractions, locking in stable D50 and narrow PSD for coating-grade silica. Over-grinding will generate excessive fine particles and shift both D50 and rheology performance.

Key trade-offs when selecting D50

  • Smaller D50: Better transparency, finer matte surface, but higher viscosity and weaker matting power.
  • Larger D50: Stronger matting, lower compound viscosity, poorer transparency, higher risk of visible surface texture.

There is no universal single D50 specification for coating silica.
For precipitated silica matting agents, the most widely adopted D50 range is 3–12 μm, selected according to target gloss and film transparency requirements. Fumed silica for rheology control uses nano-range D50 of 0.1–0.5 μm, while silica flour extenders adopt much coarser D50 above 10 μm.

Precise D50 paired with tight PSD control via air classification is essential to guarantee consistent gloss, smooth film surface and stable coating rheology.
