How To Produce High Transparency Silica For Silicone Rubber

High transparency silica for silicone rubber is typically precipitated silica or fumed silica with tightly controlled particle size, surface chemistry, purity and particle size distribution (PSD). The core goal is to match silica aggregate size to visible light wavelength, eliminate coarse grit and hard agglomerates, and reduce impurity content, so light scattering remains minimal when dispersed in silicone matrix. This article references silica dry grinding, de-agglomeration and air classification technology from silica-mill.com.

1. Raw material selection and wet synthesis control

The foundation of transparent silica lies in wet precipitation synthesis.

  • Control primary aggregate size: Target primary silica aggregate size around 100–200 nm. This size range minimizes visible light scattering. If aggregates are too large, haze increases; too fine aggregates raise surface energy and cause re-agglomeration.
  • Narrow original aggregate distribution during precipitation: Keep the reaction temperature, pH, reactant feeding rate and stirring speed stable throughout the precipitation process to avoid generating oversized primary aggregates.
  • Strict impurity control: Reduce iron, aluminium and heavy metal impurities to ppm level. Metal impurities introduce colour tint (yellow or grey), which directly ruins transparency. Low-sodium content is also required to avoid thermal discoloration when silicone parts undergo high-temperature post-curing.
  • Optimize pore structure and DBP value: Maintain a moderate and stable oil absorption value, which helps uniform dispersion in silicone polymer without excessive viscosity build-up.

2. Spray drying control to minimize hard agglomerates

After filtration and washing, silica slurry is spray dried. Spray drying easily forms rigid hard agglomerates, which are the main cause of white speckles and haze in silicone.

  • Use gentle spray drying parameters to reduce the formation of dense hard agglomerates. High inlet temperature creates tightly bonded agglomerates that are hard to break in later dry processing.
  • Avoid over-drying, which increases inter-particle hydrogen bonding and makes de-agglomeration harder.

3. Dry de-agglomeration and air classification (critical processing stage)

Even well-synthesized spray-dried silica still contains hard agglomerates. Dry milling and air classification is the key step to produce high-transparency silica.

  • Select suitable grinding equipment: Air classifier mill (ACM) or fluidized bed jet mill breaks hard spray-dried agglomerates, but must avoid over-grinding. Over-grinding will crush primary aggregates, create excessive ultra-fine fractions and increase haze.
  • Precision air classification: The classifier wheel separates oversized particles completely. Any residual coarse particles will become light-scattering centres in silicone, leading to visible spots. The classification system locks in a narrow PSD.
  • Ceramic-lined grinding and conveying: Use full ceramic lining for mill chamber, classifier and pipeline to prevent metal contamination. Metal wear debris introduces colour and reduces transparency.
  • Closed-loop negative pressure system: Prevent external dust contamination and reduce re-agglomeration of fine silica powder during transport.

4. Surface modification (hydrophobization)

As-produced precipitated silica is hydrophilic due to abundant surface silanol groups. Hydrophilic silica has poor compatibility with non-polar silicone rubber, causing poor dispersion and increased haze.

  • Conduct surface hydrophobization treatment with silane coupling agents (such as HMDS, hexamethyldisilazane).
  • Modification replaces surface silanol groups with hydrophobic organic groups. This improves silica wetting and dispersion in silicone, reduces filler-filler aggregation, and greatly enhances transparency.
  • Control modification degree: Too low modification leaves hydrophilic sites and poor dispersion; excessive modification affects reinforcement and increases production cost.

5. Quality inspection and packaging

Online and offline quality checks guarantee consistent transparency performance.

  • Test PSD, BET, CTAB, DBP, moisture, metal impurity content and colour value for each batch.
  • Conduct lab compound verification: Mix silica into standard silicone rubber, cure the sample and test haze and transmittance. This is the most direct way to confirm final transparency performance.
  • Moisture-proof sealed packaging: High moisture will trigger re-agglomeration before customer compounding, leading to loss of transparency.

Key pitfalls to avoid

  1. Over-grinding: Destroy primary aggregate structure, generate excess ultra-fine particles and raise haze.
  2. Incomplete classification: Tiny amounts of oversized grit cause speckles in clear silicone parts.
  3. Metal contamination: Introduces yellow discoloration after silicone heat aging.
  4. Insufficient surface treatment: Poor dispersion inside silicone matrix, uneven light scattering.

Producing high transparency silica for silicone rubber is a full-chain process: stable wet precipitation to control primary aggregate size and purity → gentle spray drying to limit hard agglomerates → controlled dry de-agglomeration + precision air classification to obtain narrow PSD and remove coarse particles → hydrophobic surface modification to improve silicone compatibility → strict quality testing.

The dry processing stage (de-agglomeration and air classification) is especially important. Advanced milling systems break spray-dried agglomerates without damaging the original primary silica aggregates, maintaining the particle size window required for high light transmittance.
