What Equipment Is Used For Surface Modification Of Silica

Silica surface modification (hydrophobization / silane grafting) can be completed by dry gas-solid reaction or wet slurry reaction. The goal is to graft organic groups onto surface silanol groups (-Si–OH), improving compatibility with silicone rubber, green tire treads, coatings and polymers. This article references powder processing technology from silica-mill.com.

1. Fluidized Bed Reactor (Top choice for fumed silica dry modification)

Fluidized bed reactors are the standard industrial equipment for hydrophobic fumed silica, commonly using HMDS, dimethyldichlorosilane or siloxane modifiers.

  • Working principle: Hot dry gas fluidizes silica powder to create uniform gas-solid contact. Modifier is atomized and injected into the bed, reacting with silanol groups under controlled temperature (150–300°C). Nitrogen blanketing is often used to control moisture and prevent oxidation.
  • Advantages: Gentle mixing, low risk of breaking fumed silica’s native aggregate chains; excellent uniform surface coverage; easy temperature and residence time control.
  • Best for: Fumed silica for silicone rubber, high-end coating rheology grades.
  • Limitations: Higher capital cost; sensitive to feed moisture and agglomeration.

2. High-speed Batch Heating Mixer (Popular for precipitated silica, low-to-medium capacity)

Horizontal or vertical high shear heating mixers are widely used batch dry modification equipment for precipitated silica.

  • Working principle: Silica is loaded into the vessel, heated, and silane coupling agent (Si69, Si75 etc.) is sprayed/atomized under high shear mixing. Mechanical shear breaks agglomerates and spreads modifier evenly on particle surfaces. The system maintains 100–160°C for the grafting reaction.
  • Advantages: Low investment, flexible formula switching, easy for small batches and trial production. Ceramic lining can be selected to avoid metal contamination.
  • Best for: Tire-grade precipitated silica, matting silica for coatings.
  • Limitations: Batch-to-batch variation; lower throughput; longer cycle time.

3. Continuous High-shear Coating / Mechanochemical Modifier (Large-volume continuous dry line)

Continuous multi-stage high-shear coating machines are integrated online after silica de-agglomeration and air classification.

  • Working principle: Silica and atomized silane are continuously metered into multi-chamber high-speed rotor units. Turbulent shear breaks agglomerates, spreads modifier, and particle friction supplies reaction heat. Negative pressure closed system reduces dust and re-agglomeration.
  • Advantages: Continuous production, high capacity, consistent carbon content and hydrophobicity batch to batch; can be directly coupled with jet mill / air classifier lines.
  • Best for: Mass production of precipitated silica for green tires, coating matting agents.
  • Limitations: Requires precise feeding and liquid modifier metering systems.

4. Wet Modification Reactor (Slurry-phase modification)

Wet modification is carried out in stirred tank reactors before filtration and drying.

  • Working principle: Silica slurry from precipitation is modified in liquid phase with silane. After reaction, filtration, washing, spray drying and dry de-agglomeration are followed.
  • Advantages: Very uniform surface coating, less agglomeration after modification; suitable for high transparency precipitated silica for silicone rubber.
  • Limitations: High water consumption, energy-intensive drying step; solvent recovery needed for some silane systems.

Auxiliary supporting equipment for full modification line

  1. Precision loss-in-weight feeders: Stable silica feeding and accurate silane dosing.
  2. Atomization nozzles: Convert liquid silane into fine droplets to avoid local over-coating.
  3. Heating & temperature control system: Maintain stable reaction temperature.
  4. Closed negative-pressure conveying, cyclone and bag filter collection: Capture fine silica powder and prevent dust leakage and moisture ingress.
  5. De-agglomeration equipment (jet mill / ACM + air classifier): Usually installed after modification to break post-modification agglomerates and control PSD.
  6. Online quality monitoring: Carbon content, moisture, BET and contact angle testing for finished modified silica.

Equipment selection guide

  • Fumed silica for silicone rubber: Fluidized bed reactor (dry gas phase) is preferred.
  • Precipitated silica for green tire rubber: High-speed batch mixer or continuous high-shear coating machine.
  • High-transparency precipitated silica for silicone: Wet slurry reactor + post dry de-agglomeration.
  • Coating matting silica: Continuous high-shear coating system integrated with classification.

High shear during modification must be balanced. Too strong mechanical force can fracture silica aggregates and degrade reinforcing or rheological performance. For fumed silica, avoid over-shearing; preserve the original aggregate network while achieving uniform silane grafting.
